The Sinners all take direct inspiration from famous literary sources such as Heathcliff being an reimagined verison of Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights or Yi Sang who is based off of famous Korean poet and author Kim Haegyong who went under the alias of Yi Sang while writing. Having knowledge of the Sinners' source material can help give insights on who they are as people but it also doesn't make them 1:1 representations of their sources, with some having changed genders or swapped around main characters in their stories and their motives which makes it feel like you're uncovering a completely new character.
